Shimano ST4000XGFL Stradic fl Spinning Reel
- HaganeBody – The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body stiffness and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler’s actions directly into cranking power. It’s efficiency through strength.
- X-Ship – provides improved gear durability. By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear maintains precise alignment with the drive gear. This means the gears will stay in the same position under the heaviest loads. The added benefit is that friction between the spool shaft and gear are eliminated. This will enhance the casting performance of the reel with lighter lures, and allow for longer casts.
- SA-RB – These bearings have been through the same process as our A-RB bearings, but feature shields on both sides of the bearings that reduce the possibility of salt or sand inhibiting the bearing’s rotation.
- CrossCarbonDrag – This drag material provides a wider range of drag settings, along with the smoothest Shimano drag performance ever.
- G-FreeBody – technology has been developed to shift the reel’s center of gravity closer to the rod. By moving the center of gravity closer to the angler’s hand position, the G Free Body helps to reduce fatigue and enhance casting comfort.

This new updated Stradic is the smoothest version Shimano has made so far. Stradics have always been a work horse reel for me and this new version is very solid and should hold up well fishing in saltwater. I for one am glad that Shimano has removed the anti-reverse lever on this new reel. I fish for speedy fish like Bluefin Trevally and Bonefish here in Hawaii and have never had use for the anti-reverse function on spinning reels. Removal of the anti-reverse lever makes this reel a little more water tight so I really like the change. However, this Stradic is not totally water proof. If it gets submerged is will leak. It does hold up really well getting splashed by surf while fishing in the break though. I noticed there’s no longer an oil service port screw on the side plating. If you want to oil this reel up you need to take it apart. Be prepared to get yourself a set of micro torx, small phillips, and torx drivers to take it apart. So far so good. This reel has performed great and should see a lot of good years of action like my older model Stradics.

Best reel I’ve ever used. I’ve bought a lot of cheap combos over the years, and some not so cheap from other big names. None have worked quite as smooth as this reel. The spool design gives really smooth casts, with distance being much easier to achieve than I could with other reels.Retrieval is smooth and powerful. I’ve already caught four redfish and a couple trout, along with some other fish on this reel. Two reds were 20″ and two were 24″ strong fighting fish. The reel handled it with no problem. I like to let the drag play the fish as much as possible, and it did a fantastic job. When one fish decided to run into some structure where I risked getting cut off, it was easy to tighten the drag and change his mind about which direction he was going. The finish is nice, and cleaned up easily after a full weekend on the saltwater in a kayak. Being a kayak, reels get much more abuse than they do on a boat, because you’re much more limited on space, and you sit right in the water, so it’s a good test for any reel. The retrieve speed is very nice, and again, super smooth. I can certainly feel the quality over even some other big name reels I have. One thing that I noticed that will take getting used to is where the reel comes out from the rod. This piece of metal is between my fingers all day. On the shimano, it angles downward almost immediately, causing it to put pressure in between my fingers, where others come out straight from the rod a little further. This abrupt downward sweep from the rod mount to the reel certainly made it less comfortable, and even somewhat painful at times for my bigger hands. That said, I think they did this to keep the reel itself closer to the rod so the weight is closer to the rod, and gives less fatigue. That has the unfortunate side effect of pushing on your finger, depending on how you grip the rod and reel. It’s a minor gripe, but for long 8-10 hr fishing sessions like I do (dusk till dawn if I can some days) it can cause some pain.

Use this for inshore Florida fishing: Snook, Jacks Tarpon etc. Smooth and is holding up well for the first few months. The real test is after a few years. I use Daiwa BG’s mostly but these are smoother but twice the cost. Long term we will see.

This reel is the epitome of smooth, strong, and light. Tolerances are excellent. Carbon Fiber Drag is smooth and strong. Reel performs wonderfully with nice retrieval speed. Gears are very smooth. Bearings are very smooth. The best Stradic yet! Adds confidence and enjoyment every time I use it.

Excellent reel. As nice as my old Stradic with a new look. One of my favorite spinning reel, that out perform my Abu Revo premier and Mgx.

I’ve ordered 5 of these reels in the last few months and had to send all of them back due to very poor assembly. All of the reels either had a wobble and didn’t spin as freely as a Shimano Stradic should. These reels are a disappointment considering the cheaper reel models from shimano are actually much smoother in operation. If you decide to buy this new model Stradic FL, install the handle and give it good spin. As the rotation start to slow down you will feel the wobble in your hand and that shouldn’t happen. These reels should spin several times effortlessly without spinning forcibly before coming to a stop. I contacted Shimano regarding the issue and an employee in the reel repairs department insisted that Shimano doesn’t recommend buying their products from Amazon. Thats unfair to the Sellers I think because now I don’t want to buy any Shimano reels from Amazon and may no longer be a consumer of Shimano products.

This reel is by far one of the best on the market and water.
