I fish the surf in Delaware USA .This reel plus 50lb spider braided line on a 12 foot uglistick, I can nearly reach England. The gearing on this reel is amazing for fast retrieval. In fact, I recently caught a drunk Manchester United soccer fan. I had to throw him back unfortunately. he would have looked awesome above my mantle. at any rate, yes, this reel is awesome. Yes, you will catch fish with it, and yes, you can cast far and smooth and retrieve fast. I highly recommend this if you want to fish. If you want to be like most people around here though and just drive onto the beach and chill with music, well, you need to find another beach sir. We are fishing here with out Penn Battle II 8000 reels. Find your own sand.

If you’re tired of breaking lesser reels or having them fail when it matters most, the Penn Battle II is a great compromise of price vs performance.I own several of the Battle IIs in 2000/4000/5000/6000/8000 and can attest to their workmanlike build quality. They are solid – if a bit heavy – and should only require a freshwater rinse after a day of fishing. The drag on all of my Battle II reels is fantastic and as the cheapest reel that has the HT-100 drag system, it’s a solid entry into the Penn family. If you like throwing bait and waiting on big drag screaming strikes, choose from the 5000-8000 series. If you like throwing lures, I would stick to the smaller 1000-4000 series as there is a significant weight increase from 5000 and on.There are much better reels for more money, but at the current price point, you’d be hard pressed to find a better real than a Penn Battle II. My favorites are the 4000 and 6000.If you hardly ever fish and still want a quality reel for slightly less, look at the Penn Fierce line.Only a 4 star review for the weight, for the intended use of these reels I feel like they could’ve cut down a bit throughout the entire range.Attached is a picture of my Penn 6000 that has seen plenty of sharks, rays, and other big fish and only needed fresh water rinse and an annual re-grease due to my heavy use.

My primary use for this reel was surfcasting in New Jersey for inshore species, like bluefish and striped bass. I used it regularly for one season and it served me well: the drag was smooth and I landed many fish with it. I cleaned and maintained the reel as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Unfortunately, after one season the main gear failed a few months following the expiry of the warranty. This reel may suit your needs if you fish occasionally, but due to my experience I would not recommend this reel for regular use.

When I opened the Amazon shipping box, the Penn reel box was inside and it appeared the factory seal was broken. I removed the reel and tighten up the handle. But heard a faint click as the spool would oscillate to the bottom. Contacted Amazon for exchange letting them know my issues. They were really good about the process and had a second one out ASAP.. I received the second reel and the factory seal was not tampered with. I opened the box and found there were even a couple of washers in a bag inside that I did not receive in the first one. That led me to believe I might have received a used one by mistake at first. I have used the reel a couple of times so far and have to say the reel is nice and well made. The quality appears to be top notch. I have always wanted a Penn reel but was above my budget. But at my age I felt it was time. I really wish I didn’t wait so long. This reel will serve me well for fresh and salt water fishing. Spooled up some braid and the reel is smooth with zero feedback. Been fishing for over 40 years and really like this reel and its a keeper and hope to have trouble free use. But anyone in the future who buys this reel, double check the mfg box for the seal.factory seal and make sure it hasn’t been tampered with upon arrival.

bought this reel 2 times thinking it was just coincidence that the first one got sticky on cranking in fish brand new outta box…Had it serviced and in the mean time ordered another..Too bad so sad, got hosed again and the same problem occurred. Penn quality has never been so low. no more Penns for me

I was having high expectations of this reel after reading plentiful of good reviews. However, after unboxing and my first feel of it did not really impressed me as much but enough to make me feel awesome though. Perhaps I was overly expecting it to be better than all reels below it’s retail price.I have an Abu Garcia Pro Max SP30 reel and comparing the ‘dry spin’ and ‘feel’ on both reels, the SP30 is smoother and is as solidly built as the PB II 2000. I then oiled it up with a drop of super reel oil on both the spool and handle bearing and it flew like a feather. I am very delighted indeed. One rather exceptional feature I like most about the PB II 2000 is the higher spinning ratio of 6.2:1, which not many spinning reel has.I am pairing my Penn Battle II 2000 with an Ugly Stick Elite 6′ 6″ Ultralight rod (which I ordered here at the same time with this reel) and intend to spool it up with Kastking Copolymer 6lbs/0.2mm line. Will comment more after some field tests.

This reel is everything I wanted and more. It retrieval is flawless and it has held up to a 5+ ft shark that hooked my line. I love the braid ready strip which has held my spiderwire stealth 30lb braided line well. I went to a live bait shop at Myrtle beach and this reel on the ugly stick is what the owner had in the store for sale and what the owner stated he uses on his charters. I have the 3000 and it is the perfect combo reel. I use this for mainly freshwater and trips to the beach. I highly recommend this reel.

Looks a good quality reel. I know it can put up with some punishment. My friend took his one to Norway and it coped with good double figure Cod & Coalfish caught on lures. Looking forward to using it. Only gripe was that I was told it was handed to a neighbour but found it on my front doorstep…!!!

I brought this reel to use with the Shakespeare ugly stik the rod and reel go perfectly together for me some might find the reel a little on the small ,but it’s nice and very lightweight but that doesn’t mean that it’s not very well made.l found the combination of the two perfect

Enjoyed every minute of using it. Was not easy to get used to to start but once I knew how to use it, I was getting good distance! Bought a new Assassin 12.5ft x 3 piece rod to go with it – well matched to suite my Cape Town trip.

The reel is awesome..I think packing (it came with original box) is little bit poor for especially international shipping. It’s very susceptible to damage as I see. One more box with some protection will be better for possible damages.
