I fish from shore, and this baitcaster does the job. I have fished this reel 15+ times in chest deep water with 3ft waves. I sure did get hit with a few plus sized waves that put my reel under water (don’t tell anyone). I have opened and inspected this reel before writing a review. What I found as a very slightly wet looking surface, which wasn’t salt water (weird I know). It is possible that when I rinse the reel after every use, fresh water gets in there, though I dump water on the reel with a cup and do not allow actual faucet pressure to hit the reel, which could push debris into the reel housing. I also found the gears to be a little under greased. No joke, other than adding some grease and oil I found nothing noteworthy. No sand, no saltwater, no rusting. THRILLED WITH THIS PURCHASE!

Years ago, I had several old Diawa Pro Tournament series reels and I loved them and their magnetic casting control especially when changing weight and type of lures… I jumped on the Shimano Curado bandwagon and still have several of the old SuperFree’s… They are great reels… I saw this one while doing some new real searching and decided to give it a try… All I can say is WOW! This is the smoothest casting slick winding and fish fighting reel of this class that I have ever had! I will sell my old Curados after a bit more hours with this reel. Am about to order another one. Daiwa has THE BEST magnetic cast control of all the major brands. When you change to a heavier weight lure, just a couple clicks up on the magnetgic control and rare back and let it rip for loooooong casting with zero over runs!Update as of 4/29/19This is my 4th purchase of this item. I have converted all my saltwater set ups over from old Curado Superfree reels to this reel… This reel is especially good for fishing (I mostly wade fish) when you have to cast directly into the wind… Anti-backlash control system is the best I’ve ever used.

What an awesome reel.. this being my first real bait caster it’s completely night and day. I’ve had other entry level setups but nothing as smooth as this one. I’ve had the opportunity to finally use it in the surf and what a difference it made in my cast alone. The t-wing concept is awesome which I feel aids less in“birds nesting”. The 7.3:1 gear ratio is stellar compared to abu Garcia’s similar ratios. With the more pronounced hand assembly you can connect with the reel much sooner than with much smaller handles. I have paired this setup with 20lb J braid X grand 8 and was able to get as much as 170-190yards. As far as the weight goes 8.1 oz is huge factor when walking long distances to seek out fish. For smaller target species like surf perch or bass in general its great.

This is the one. Over the last thirty years I have fished inshore for redfish, trout, permit, bonefish and the occasional large predators. Last week my son and I spent several days in Georgetown, SC and really wrung this reel out. It is the smoothest, most controllable baitcast reel we have used to date. And the drag is superb on redfish up to 25 pounds. Our guide couldn’t believe the distance it could cast without backlash. Daiwa is onto something here and this reel kicks it up a notch.

I was looking for a bass reel to pair up with a swimbait rod using 1-5oz lures. I bought a curado k first because I’m a Shimano guy, but sadly there was a defect and I returned it (great reel minus defect). Did some research and thought I’d give Daiwa a chance, and it payed off. Fantastic reel! Easy to calibrate the braking system, casts as far as the curado k, just as smooth as a curado k, but more line capacity, and a beefier drag. Reels in big 4-6 lbs bass like they are 1 lbs. For a 200 size reel, it’s hard to beat!

I own 6 of these reels. I mainly Bass fish but these reels are salt rated for when I do go saltwater fishing, I am ready for it. Holds plenty of line and the large handles makes everything super smooth. 7.3:1 ratio gear is not too fast and not too slow. Very very nice reels. Wish they made these with faster gear ratios for technique specific fishing.. But it works great!!! I bought some cheap reel covers for the reels to keep them from getting scratched up. They scratch easy…

I have been using this reel for surf and kayak fishing in the ocean, and in the lake. Very easy to use, and very capable of pulling in heavy loads (like getting caught in a massive kelp bundle) I’ve had a few insidents of it getting wet with salt water, and with a good soapy rinse after use, it has held up to its original functionality! It handles very well, and casts like a champ when configured properly. I would recommend this to any angler, especially those tackling the salt water swimmers!

Use it surfperch fishing today and not 1 birds nest. I had the brakes all the way up and work my way down to a 5 was my sweet spot casting 3oz sinker on a 10’6″ rod. It cast really smooth even when I throw my hardest in the cast I felt no resistance and reels in just as smooth. This reel is smoother than my Shimano Tranx 200. I plan on getting 2 more Daiwa Coastal reels in the future.

This is my first bait casting reel so I have nothing to compare it to but I’m sure its making the learning process easier.

Great reel for salmon and steelhead and bigger fish. Larger capacity and heavier drag. No backlash either
