The burrs are durable, and will remain sharp for many years.

I bought it to have precise dosing (by weight)… it looks sexy but it has a lot of small problems:1. The base area is small, and most of the weight is at the top of the “7” shape (high center of gravity?)… this makes it feel unstable and easy to tip over.2. If you ground directly to a normal Espresso Portafilter (as pictured), the portafilter weight will make the scale hooks vibrate more… so the target dose weight is unreliable… it always is off by more than -3 grams. So I had to switch to dispensing to the included plastic bin… and then transferring ground coffee to Portafilter.3. For some reason, during first runs after unpacking, it got clogged, the motor kept running since the target weight was not getting there, eventually the internal fuse broke and it stopped working. I had to open it and replace fuse.4. After the above incident i had to disassemble the burr, clean and adjust… the finer ground setting was not fine enough for my espresso machine (Nuova Simonelli Oscar), so i had to add the included metal rings to the burr to increase its range. Today i use it between 3 and 2 macro setting, being 1 the minimum setting possible.Definitively not for heavy use… and not recommended for espresso coffee, maybe OK for other brew methods.

When my Breville finally died, I decided to upgrade to this. It’s amazing. I was worried it would look cheap in person, but I was pleasantly surprised. There’s still a lot of plastic, but it looks really nice sitting on our coffee bar. I had read the reviews before getting this, so I knew it would be loud, but I was still shocked at how loud it is. There is no way that I could use this without waking up the rest of the house (& I could with the Breville). The grind is amazing though. Fluffy, consistent, just perfect. We use this for espresso, and it’s very easy to dial in. I’m in love, but I would have paid a bit more for more sound deadening and maybe a nicer exterior finish (though it does look better in person).

I have to start by saying customer service from Barratza is exceptional. Having said that I’m pretty sure they took feedback from the previous model and decided to add major improvements to this model. The “I” stands for intelligent and what this means is, it learns as it grinds and adjusts the speed to reach the accurate weight you programmed. I have used the previous model 270W and the noise has been significantly reduced during grinding. I have a different grinder made by a reputable company that cost around $200 and the espresso was decent. Once you’ve used this grinder you will immediately see the difference in consistency, color and taste. Although the price may appear steep at the $500 range, it will bring your espresso to commercial level quality. It looks sleek and modern and everyone will be impressed by its ability for consistent espresso. Pair this grinder with the Breville dual boiler and you will have espresso of champions.

After completing the rebuild of a lightly-used two-group commercial espresso machine, I was looking for an upgrade from not-so-good grinder to a prosumer grade grinder. I watched several video reviews and decided that I needed to give consideration to the Sette 270 / 270w. I struggled with having to spend an extra $120 to have a built-in scale. Long story short, I decided to go for the 270w. Space is tight, and not having to tare the portafilter then weigh the dose won the day.I was firm in my decision until I started looking at online sellers. Some of the consumer reviews were critical of Sette 270w’s most important features. I took the time to do more research and came to the conclusion that the reviewers may not have taken the time to learn about this grinder’s features before they purchased one.My Sette 270w arrived a couple days ago. I am not disappointed. Is it loud? Yes.Is it fast? Yes.Is it accurate? It usually over runs the dose by .3 to .5 grams. Knowing this, you can compensate by adjusting the presets.Baratza supplies a one sheet Quick Start Guide, but no manual. For the manual, you have to go to the Baratza website. I would recommend that anyone considering the Sette 270w read the manual before purchasing. In the manual you learn that this machine has a duty cycle that limits the amount of doses. Great for home, but not so good for a coffee shop. The manual also tells you how to change the presets and how to run the grinder manually. Some other reviewers complained about the delay between pushing the run button and the start of grinding. The manual explains that the pause is for the scale to tare. This also answers the criticism of one reviewer who didn’t understand that the scale will tare to whatever filter or container is placed in the scale. What do I like about this grinder?1. No doser. I’m not running a high-volume coffee shop. I pull two or three shots of espresso each day. I want my coffee to grind directly into my portafilter basket. I don’t want ground coffee sitting in a doser. I don’t want to have to clean a doser.2. Direct grind path. There are not many grinders that offer this. The Sette 270 series drops the ground coffee directly into the portafilter basket. No chutes to clean. No clumping in the grind.3. Fast. After a brief delay for the scale to tare, this thing goes all out with the grind. It does, however, make me wonder: If they slowed it down a bit, they may have been able to prevent the over-dose situation.4. Even grind. The grind (at least on the finer espresso settings) is very consistent. A close look at the grind shows no clumps and consistent size. What don’t I like about this grinder?1. Loud. Everyone seems to think it’s loud, and I agree. Someday, I’m going to get my dB meter out and do a comparison between this grinder and a couple other grinders. Then I’ll know for sure :)My conclusion: The Baratza Sette 270W is a great prosumer espresso grinder. I am certainly glad that I bought one.UPDATE:I have had this grinder for 2 months. I love it as much now as I did the day I bought it. I typically grind 18 grams directly into my portafilter. It still over grinds .3 to .5 grams. I use a moka pot in the morning, so I put the extra from my early evening espresso into the container that came with the 270W and use it in the moka pot the next morning. On the weekend, I do about 3 or 4 shots on Saturday and 6 to 8 shots on Sunday. The 270W operates consistently. I taste every shot and adjust the grind as necessary. The grind can be adjusted very easily, as much or as little as desired.I clean the grinder about once a week.It is very easy to take the burrs out, clean them, and replace them.

There are 2 great reasons to buy this machine – consistently excellent grind and Baratza customer service. The machine has an adjustable arm that holds the portafilter in place from the top so that it is level. If the portafilter is not level, coffee grinds can spray everywhere. On my first machine the adjustable arm is adjusted using a small hex screw set in plastic. This broke after about 6 months of use. Baratza customer support was fantastic – they immediately shipped me a new machine before I had even returned my old machine so I only went 1 day without a machine. And the new machine has a metal housing for the hex screw instead of plastic and looks sturdier. It is really important to get the adjustable arm to the right position so that the portafilter is exactly level, otherwise coffee grinds spray outside of the portafilter. This takes some trial and error.

Overall, I’m very happy with this grinder so far. Initial set up was straight forward, other than for the fact that Baratza supply the wrong sized hex key for adjusting the hook that stabilizes the portafilter! Do, however, download the full manual from Baratza’s website. The quick set-up guide is minimalist. It’s worth taking time over set-up if you’re intending to grind straight into the portafilter as, if the portafilter isn’t held firmly and level, it can upset the weighing mechanism.Once set up, this is very easy to use and has produced very consistent grinds so far. Grinding is very quick but a little noisy. Weighing appears to be accurate to within 0.2 g and you can adjust the offset if you are getting consistent over or underweighing (you need to Google this, it’s not in the manual). It’s easy to switch between weighed mode and the manual setting, useful for purging and you can shut off the hopper to minimise waste when swapping beans.I’ve only used this for grinding espresso. Word on the street is that it’s not the best grinder for coarser grinds for French press etc. It’s designed for home use and you should note Baratza’s advice on duty cycles. At the price point, it feels like terrific value for the home enthusiast.

Crazy expensive but I have used the same grinder for years and this made a huge difference. Hopefullly won’t need another one for 10+ years! It never quite weighs 18g with the coffee I use, always hits .4 or .8 but I can’t see that as being a major issue 😀

Very poor built quality. Very loud. Accurate weight measurement. The portafilter holder broke after a few months causing the wighing scales to not work.

This Grinder never worked as spected, Tare and weight function fails, Baratza recognised this model has flaws and directed me to amazon for a refund, Amazon refuses to refund.

Very good in terms of coffee weighting ,precision, speed and style. But in my opinion the portafilter is held too close to the spout (chute), of the grinder. Consequently spilling occur when the coffee mount touches the spout toward the end of the grinding cycle. Also static occur frequently and contribute to the spilling and loss of coffee weight precision . But finally not a big issue. Overall a very good, precise, and stylish grinder for the price.
